  This course combines fundamental skill development for understanding and analyzing literature with research based course design to empower students for reading,writing,and speaking with confidence and understanding.Students learn how to apply their skills and experiences to the task of analyzing challenging texts.We will also practice applying these skills to ideas beyond literature.

  In this section of the course,we will be studying how to use the basic components of literature as a tool for breaking down complex text.Our first direction of access will be through annotating for plot,setting,tone,and thematic values.We will use this anaylsis to identified conflicts in moral values and make connections to the world in which we,as readers,live.

  Capstone Project
  Each student will culminate our work with the novels to present a survey of the ideas each novel has presented to the reader.What does each novel encourage you to think about?The project will present a survey of the writer's thinking journey through the course and build to a presentation of the writer's own thinkingthat has been inspired by our analysis.This project will involve a formal paper and a formal presentation in front of the class as well as feedback delivered to ech student from each student.

  In this section of the course,we will be studying how to use the analytical skills developed in the first part of the course to assess the argument presented by a work of literature.We will study the structure of argument and rhetoric.We will annotate the novels as we trained to do and then apply our understadning of argument to determine how the text speaks to us.
